The Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA) envisions a world where the mining industry respects the human rights and aspirations of affected communities, provides safe, healthy and supportive workplaces, minimizes harm to the environment, and leaves positive legacies.
The internationally recognised IRMA Standard for Responsible Mining enables assessment of social and environmental performance at mine sites globally, and is applicable to all sizes of industrial-scale mines and all mined materials except for energy fuels. IRMA's Chain of Custody Standard allows tracking IRMA-assessed material from the mine site to the end user. IRMA’s global standards are developed in consultation with a broad range of stakeholders and rights holders.

ISEAL Code Compliant organisations have successfully adhered to our previous Codes of Good Practice (Standard-Setting, Impacts and Assurance) and have committed to aligning their systems to the ISEAL Code. Independent evaluations against the ISEAL Code commenced in October 2025, and organisations must demonstrate full adherence to the ISEAL Code by October 2029 to maintain their ISEAL Code Compliant status.
Please note, all ISEAL Code Compliant members are also ISEAL Community Members.
IRMA successfully completed an independent evaluation against the ISEAL Code of Good Practice for Sustainability Systems, with this achievement resulting in the granting of ISEAL Code Compliant status effective from 16 February 2026.
As a result of the independent evaluation, IRMA has made the following improvements to their system, which they would like to highlight:
- Developed supplemental guidance on Board of Directors voting during periods of Board seat vacancies to further protect equal governance across sectors in IRMA decision-making, a core IRMA value.
- Refreshed IRMA Theory of Change with a new round of input from Board of Directors and Members.
- Improved and developed policies regarding data governance and management, and documented IRMA resources and responsibilities.
- Created a stand-alone IRMA Exception Procedure to clarify procedures, including stakeholder and rights holder input, for any temporary exception to IRMA assurance rules.
