Project Overview
Smallholder farmers in Indonesia are increasingly asked to provide sustainability, due-diligence and production information to multiple organisations. Similar information may be collected repeatedly, while farmers often have limited control over how it is stored, shared or reused - and may receive little direct value from providing it. Bridge and Preferred by Nature will explore whether a different approach could be useful. Working with farmers and other stakeholders connected to Preferred by Nature’s existing activities in Indonesia, the project will test the concept of converting existing sustainability evidence into portable, verifiable credentials that farmers could hold and selectively share in a future system.
The project will develop an early prototype and use it to explore practical questions with stakeholders. These will include what information would be most valuable, who should be able to provide or validate it, what would make the evidence trustworthy, and how greater farmer control could work in practice.
The work will also examine the potential role of community participation, including whether local young people and people who are often underrepresented in formal data and assurance processes could contribute to documenting or validating agreed evidence in a future model. The findings will help determine whether the approach merits further piloting, investment and development in Indonesia and other smallholder contexts.
