Climate change and water stress threaten rice production globally, while markets increasingly demand traceable, low-emission supply chains. Yet smallholder farmers – who produce most of the world’s rice – often lack the tools, data, and incentives to demonstrate compliance or climate-smart performance.
The Sustainable Rice Platform sought to address this gap by developing a scalable, science-based framework for estimating emissions from rice farming. The ‘Low-Carbon’ Assurance Module (LCAM) extends the scope of their Assurance Scheme – measuring and validating Scope 3 greenhouse gas reductions achieved by rice farmers through adoption of the SRP Standard.
By embedding robust data and traceability into the SRP system, the aim is to help producers, buyers, and regulators assess climate impacts more accurately and enable companies to make verifiable sustainability and carbon claims in their value chains – driving transparency, resilience, and market access in sustainable rice supply chains.
