Climate, biodiversity and nature
Tackling climate change and nature loss is a top priority for our community, and every ISEAL member strives to deliver the most effective solutions within their own sectors. But the scale and urgency of these challenges demand ambitious, coordinated action. ISEAL works on climate and nature to drive alignment, credible practice and innovation, amplifying the impact of voluntary sustainability systems (VSS).
We take a holistic approach to our work, recognising that environmental outcomes cannot be divorced from livelihood outcomes. We also believe that solving any sustainability issue requires credible action at both the landscape level and the production site.
Our work on climate and nature is centred around:
We have a long history of working with the research community and VSS to produce and make available objective, rigorous and relevant information about the impacts of VSS.
The ISEAL Innovations Fund has channelled over GBP 2 million into member‑led projects on biodiversity, climate, and deforestation since 2016, powering practical solutions and lasting partnerships.
ISEAL facilitates various spaces to advance on topics such as GHG accounting, data interoperability and payment for ecosystem services, leveraging the technical expertise in our member organisations and the learning gained through the Innovations Fund portfolio of projects.

For the past 5 years, ISEAL has been bringing together a diverse network of landscape and jurisdictional practitioners to jointly develop guidance on credible landscape-level monitoring and claims.
ISEAL is a thought leader in credible claims and has been developing guidance on the topic since 2015, including guidance for good practice on claims related to sustainability impacts and outcomes.
