ISEAL releases updated version of the ISEAL Code

ISEAL has published version 1.1 of the ISEAL Code of Good Practice for Sustainability Systems (the ISEAL Code), introducing editorial updates and clarifications based on stakeholder feedback.

The ISEAL Code provides a globally recognised framework for strengthening the effectiveness of sustainability systems. Underpinned by the ISEAL Credibility Principles, it equips sustainability systems to deliver meaningful progress on critical sustainability challenges.

The first version of the ISEAL Code (v1.0) came into effect on 1 March 2024, following a global, multi-stakeholder consultation process. Since then, feedback from ISEAL Community Members and other stakeholders highlighted opportunities to improve how the ISEAL Code is used and understood.

What’s new in v1.1?

The latest update introduces non-substantive and editorial changes designed to improve clarity, consistency and usability. They do not affect the performance level and expectations for compliance.

Clearer requirements for remediation: New guidance and restructuring of requirements make content related to remediation more visible.

Consistency with ISEAL’s resources: Terminology has been updated, including replacing ‘data ownership’ with ‘data rights’ to align with ISEAL’s guidance on structuring data sharing and licensing agreements. Glossary terms have also been refined to match the updated chain of custody models and definitions guidance.

Editorial updates and guidance: Clause 2.2 has been revised to improve consistency with ISEAL’s Community Member Requirements. New guidance acknowledges external resources on responsible business conduct and dispute resolution.

Version 1.1 is effective immediately. The revision was overseen by the ISEAL Technical Committee.

Independent evaluations of sustainability systems against the ISEAL Code, beginning in October 2025, will be conducted using v1.1.
